One of best things about being a mom of a little girl are the super cute mommy and me outfits we get to wear. Also she is truly one of my sounding boards when it comes to fashion. When I can't make a decision on what and what not to wear, my little style gene never leads me astray. Needless to say projects like these make me very happy!
Last year I saw a dope mint green shaggy fur jacket online for a hefty price of $I cant afford that! So it went into my inspiration folder. A few months ago we were in one of my favorite stores (shout out to Joann Fabric) we saw some super cute shaggy faux fur fabric, Brook immediately asked if we could make something with it and I had the perfect idea. I was super excited because it also came in my color crushes for the last few seasons, blush and burgundy.

Keep reading for a quick how to on creating these little beauties. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do, dress them up or just throw on with some jeans and sneakers, you can't go wrong. Send me pictures of how your jacket turned out and how you are rocking it.
We are going to simple use a coat or jacket that you own to use as an outline.
Materials you will need:
1-2 yards of faux fur (depending on size)
1-2 yards of lining fabric
Matching thread
Jacket
Ruler
Chalk marker or fabric pen
Paper to trace on
scissors
sewing machine.
- Fold the jacket in half with seems together and sleeves tucked in.
-Lay the jacket on some tracing paper or news paper (really any paper works) and trace
-Using a ruler add a 1/2 inch seam allowance around and cut out pattern
-Repeat for the sleeves remembering to add seam allowance.

- With fabric folded right sides(fur side) together, lay the pattern on the fabric with the center fold line on the fold of the fabric and trace with your marker. Cut out 2 pieces a front piece and a back piece.
-Repeat with the sleeves remembering to place the center fold line on the fold of the fabric. Again you will cut out 2 pieces (the right and left sleeve)
-Take one of the body pieces folded in half and cut down the center to make 2 pieces, this will be the front of the coat.
(TIP: when cutting fur don't open your scissors all the way and make big cuts as you will blunt cut the hairs... Work slowly and snip along the base of the fabric with just the tip of the scissors.)

After everything is cut out you should have 5 fur pieces and 5 lining pieces
Time to assemble the coat. You will sew the lining together first, then the outer coat.
-Take the body pieces and lay the front pieces on top of the back piece rights rides together
-Pin the shoulder seams and stitch across

- Now add the sleeves. Rights sides together place the top center of the sleeve and pin it to the shoulder seam, from there continue to pin the down.
-Repeat on the other sleeve and stitch around.

- Place the sides of the body and sleeve together and pin.
-Starting on either side sew along the side and down the sleeve in one continuous stitch
-If you do not have a serger you may want to go around the seams of the lining at this point with a zigzag stitch to keep the fabric from fraying and causing a hole in the fabric later.

-Now you have a jacket made from lining REPEAT these same step with the fur, making sure that all the fur is pushed inside before sewing.

-With the fur turned inside out place the lining inside of the outer coat right sides should be facing.
- Pin and sew around the entire coat making sure to tuck in the fur as you go. Leaving a 4-5 inch hole at the bottom.
- Pull the coat through the hole and top stitch along the opening to close up the coat.

The sleeve can be a little more complex so for time and simplicity sake I am going to give you alternative way to finish the sleeve.
- Pull the outer sleeve and lining out, lining side should be showing.
- Fold the lining and the outer sleeve in towards each other 1/2 inch around and hand stitch around, now repeat on the other side.
- Turn the sleeves right side out and you are all done.

Show us how you rocked your new coat.
